Training & Development Manager
As we launch our new five year strategy with our people at the heart of it we are looking for a kind, friendly, people focussed individual to lead on all our Training and Development activity. This is a new and critical role at a hugely important time. It will be challenging. There are a number of changes needed but the existing training team are full of enthusiasm and relishing the opportunity to move forward. The main skill required is the ability to listen and learn, before turning that learning into meaningful action. The successful applicant will be someone who is genuinely people focussed, can listen, is proactive and self starting and able to manage change.
Purpose
A people focussed, kind and friendly individual, the Training and Development Manager is responsible for overseeing all new entrant training provision, whilst also providing ongoing training and personal development for everyone that works in Stagecoach South East including our drivers, engineers, instructors, inspectors, supervisors, clerical staff, controllers and managers. Recognising how important our people are in meeting the aims of the business, the Training and Development Manager reports directly to the Managing Director. The post holder will have accountability for the Driver training school, driver and engineering apprenticeships whilst working closely with the HQ team for all office based apprenticeships. In addition, the post holder will work closely with the Managing Director, executive team and UK bus to identify and implement other personal and team development opportunities for our managers, controllers and the wider business.
Key Responsibilities
• Design, deliver and lead a new Training and Development team that spans the whole of the South East operating company, overseeing the training and development of everyone that works in the business;
• Working with the operations team, use historical attrition data and safety system data to forecast future driver training requirements and recruit to headcount to make sure the necessary resources are always in place to meet demand;
• Working with the engineering team, identify the required level of training vehicles and make sure your area of the business is appropriately resourced to meet demand through the creation of robust business cases;
• Lead the operations training team to deliver safe, capable, customer focussed drivers through the New Driver Training Programme (NDTP);
• Work with UK Bus to deliver an engaging ongoing competency management process through the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) process;
• Work with the Operations and Engineering teams to oversee delivery of the driver and engineer apprenticeship programme;
• Working with the engineering leadership team, design and deliver an enhanced process to oversee the development of our engineering colleagues;
• Work with the HQ team to deliver a new range of apprenticeship opportunities to create succession planning and business sustainability;
• Work with the Managing Director and Executive Team to oversee the delivery of robust people development plans for instructor, inspector, controller and management roles;
• Take a lead in the ‘Next Stage’ staff development programme for the South East;
• Support the local managers with a standardised approach to the recruitment of frontline colleagues;
• Any other reasonable duties as requested by the Managing Director or Executive Team.
Essential characteristics
• Friendly, kind and a great listener;
• Pro-active and self-starting, happy to work in an empowered role and able to do the right thing;
• People focussed team player with a passion for collaboration;
• The ability to bring people on-side through relationship building rather than hierarchy;
• Positive, can-do attitude;
• Ability to manage change activity as part of a wider programme of work;
• Organised and structured;
• Proven track record in the field of learning and development;
• Able to think strategically and build long term plans.
