Application Form

Community Marketing & Engagement Officer – Fixed Term until October 2022

£22,054 - £25,000 depending on experience

Canterbury, Kent

The Dean and Chapter of Canterbury

Canterbury Cathedral remains one of the most visited places in the country. It is first and foremost a working living church and community offering a warm welcome to all visitors, groups and individuals from all over the world. Alongside its programme of daily worship, the Cathedral offers a wide range of facilities including guided Cathedral tours, behind the scenes visits to unseen areas such as the Stained Glass Studio, Stone Conservation Workshop, and the Archives & Library. It boasts Hotel and Conference facilities, an ongoing events program, world class musicians, and first class facilities for the 100,000 or so school children who visit the Cathedral every year.

The Cathedral and its Precincts are currently nearing the end of an exciting project, The Canterbury Journey, that has seen them undergo a programme of development and restoration which will conserve and safeguard this beautiful buildings heritage for future generations and enrich the experience of those who visit. The Journeys aim is to engage new audiences through the creation of exhibitions and interpretation while new spaces have been created to open up access to the Cathedral and showcase its rich heritage and outstanding collections. A brand new Visitor Centre has recently been opened offering a new shop and exhibition space that will support and increase the level of visitor engagement.

As The Canterbury Journey prepares to hand over its reins, an opportunity has arisen for the appointment of a Community Marketing & Engagement Officer. As part of the Cathedral's Marketing & Communication team, this role will be responsible for increasing visitor engagement primarily through the proposition and delivery of a new Cathedral Pass scheme, which provides free entry to the Cathedral and Precincts for local residents and others, which is a key deliverable of The Canterbury Journey. The role however extends beyond just delivering the new Pass system, but also in the creation of a range of events and initiatives, and communicating them throughout the year to a local audience to increase their engagement with the Cathedral. A key priority of the role is to also promote the wider progress and outputs of The Canterbury Journey project, ensuring that these are effectively assimilated within the Cathedrals wider marketing and communication activity.

We are therefore looking for someone who:

- has proven event management skills preferably in a destination environment;

- has proven marketing and communications skills;

- has good project management skills;

- has proven experience of effectively using digital communications, especially social media and CRM for communications and public engagement;

- has a good working knowledge of Adobe applications, particularly InDesign and Photoshop; and

- has photographic and image editing experience.

If you are a talented, dynamic, proactive individual who is looking for an exciting new challenge within an internationally renowned place of worship and a World Heritage Site, then we would love to hear from you.

This post is expected to start January 2022 (earlier if possible) and is offered on a fixed term basis, working 37.5 hours a week until October 2022.
