Senior Port/Environmental Health Officer

£34134 - £39528 per annum

Ashford, Kent

New Appointments Group

We are working in partnership with Ashford Borough Council on an exciting project for border control facilities designated to a site on the outskirts of Ashford, with a planned start date of March 2021 and a 'go-live' date of April 2021. The site will provide customs and transit checks required for hauliers following Brexit. There are a number of roles to be filled on a permanent, fixed terms and temporary basis. The site will be operational 24 hours/365 days and will require candidates to commit to a work pattern covering these hours.

The Senior Port/Environmental Health Officer role will be undertaking a range of statutory duties to safeguard public health whilst conducting official controls including carrying out checks on imports of products of animal origin and high risk food not of animal origin in order to ensure that only products that are safe to eat enter the food chain. This include checks of organic food, illegal unreported and unregulated fishing, animal composites and other relevant controlled goods.

You will be qualified to MSc, Degree or Diploma level in Environmental Health and possess a Certificate of Registration with EHRB and undertake import controls at Border Control posts as defined by the FSA Food Law Code of Practice. Experience of food control work is required, together with experience of covering a wide range of food areas including inspection of premises, monitoring and food sampling plus prosecution experience.

Candidates who possess specialist port health training and/or qualifications, are a APHA/CIEH and or able to operate as an official fish Inspector, will be looked at favourably; together with direct experience in port health, import/export controls and Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing provisions.

It is also desirable for candidates to possess enforcement experience covering a wide range of food areas including inspection of premises, monitoring and food sampling; including prosecution experience, along with operational and/or technical lead knowledge within a food related service. Knowledge of port health database/systems such as PHILIS, IPAFFS and FSA risk-likelihood dashboard is also desired.
