Head of Estates & Fabric

£ 55,000 to £ 60,000 per annum - Doe

Canterbury, Kent

The Dean and Chapter of Canterbury

Canterbury Cathedral remains one of the most visited places in the country with over 1 million visitors each year to this World Heritage site. It is first and foremost a working, living church and community offering a warm welcome to all visitors, groups and individuals from all over the world, delivering its mission ‘to show people Jesus’.

Conservation work on the Cathedral is never ending, with the majority of work carried out by our own highly skilled crafts and trades (wo)men and apprentices. The people who work to conserve the Cathedral’s fabric are highly skilled artists and craftspeople. Their work requires sensitivity to the spirit of the building. The aim is to slow down the process of decay, and to replace only those parts that have lost the battle for survival.
The brand new post of Head of Estates & Fabric will have responsibility for strategy, planning and budgets within Estates and Fabric and overall coordination and oversight of the work of Estates & Fabric departments and other Cathedral areas. We are therefore seeking an individual who has knowledge of historic buildings, a proven track record of successfully delivering large projects on time and within budget, solid experience of managing an estates team and a demonstrable track record of devising an implementing commercially-focused strategies for specialist fabric work and a commercial portfolio.

The role will support the new post of Head of External Engagement in wider visitor engagement strategy through use of Estates & Fabric departments where appropriate and be responsible for bringing together the different professions and crafts of the Cathedral into a coherent commercial package and contracting with customers.
