Mechanical Engineering Officer and Team Supervisor

The School of Engineering and Digital Arts (EDA) is launching a new undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering to complement our existing portfolio of Electronic and Computer Systems Engineering courses. At the same time the School is undertaking a multimillion pound refurbishment of its Mechanical Workshop and developing new complimentary facilities to create a modern, practical and innovative learning environment.

EDA is seeking to appoint a specialist Mechanical Engineering Officer and Team supervisor to head up the Mechanical Engineering Technical team and be responsible for the safe and effective operation of the new Engineering facilities. You will be responsible for the delivery of Mechanical Engineering technical support provision, providing the very best customer service standards at all times.

You will also lead the development of technician led practical teaching and will also provide the necessary support to academic staff to deliver the Schools teaching programs. You will ensure the team is best positioned to support the emerging Mechanical Engineering research group and support the Schools enterprise and innovation activities. You will provide strong supervisory skills to the technical team as well as being a hands on Mechanical Engineering specialist, capable of providing subject leading technical guidance and support to technical colleagues, School staff and students.

As Mechanical Engineering Officer and Team supervisor you will:

Provide assistance to academic staff in the delivery of Mechanical Engineering teaching.
Deliver the teaching of practical Mechanical engineering independently and as part of a team.
Project manage all work undertaken with external clients by the Mechanical team. Work to tight deadlines and manage complex specifications whilst balancing conflicting demands. expectations & quality.
Maintain equipment and teaching resources, ensuring they are fit for purpose and operational when needed. Manage the allocation of work between the team to ensure work is completed in a timely fashion and equitably shared. Review completed work for accuracy and effectiveness, intervening where needed and providing staff training.


To be successful in this role you will have:

Educated to HNC\HND level or above in a relevant subject (or equivalent professional qualification)
Proven experience in a Mechanical Engineering support role
Ability to read and produce technical drawings
Experience in designing, manufacturing and testing mechanical assemblies
Experience using CAD software e.g. Fusion 360, AutoCAD or similar
A good understanding of Health & Safety issues in the workplace, particularly mechanical workshop environments
