We are seeking a creative, talented and highly motivated Press Officer to join our busy and successful team.

As a member of the Press Office you will be responsible for raising and enhancing the University’s reputation and profile by achieving high levels of media coverage to highlight our research and innovation activities, our high-quality education and student experience, and our civic mission.

You will work proactively to gather news stories from a range of sources and have an ability to turn often complex information into high-quality and engaging copy, often to tight deadlines.

Applicants will have an outstanding record in media and communications work, as well as a digital-first approach.

The postholder will:

Develop and maintain the University’s regional, national and international media profile
Provide media support and direction to academic schools and centres across all University campuses and locations
Advise and direct staff in their work with the media
Support the University’s activities in reputation management and have a key role in crisis management

To be successful in this role you will have:

A degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant area
An outstanding record in media and communications work, with substantial experience
The ability to work with highly complex subject matter across a broad range of subject areas
The ability to develop and maintain excellent personal contacts with the media, academics, stakeholders and business partners


Corporate Communications seeks to build and protect the institution’s reputation at a regional, national and international level. The department is comprised of a team of professionals with the director reporting to the Vice-Chancellor. The team works in collaboration with colleagues across the institution and engages with a wide range of stakeholders including the media, national agencies, staff, students and the local community. Departmental activities include press relations, reputation management, brand guidance, staff and student communications, publications, stakeholder engagement, digital and social media activities and corporate marketing campaigns. The department leads on the institution’s crisis communications response.
