This is a new role, reporting to the Assistant Director of Estates (Maintenance & Technical Services), accountable for the development and management of the University's mechanical and electrical services, infrastructure and building fabric. Following a restructure within the Estates Department, this role will head up a new Technical services team of professional specialists, providing consultancy and expertise for strategic planning, technical design and compliance. Working with internal customers, colleagues and external stakeholders, the role-holder will be part of a team providing a seamless service for the delivery of projects, setting standards for reactive and planned maintenance, and the long-term development of the Estate


You will be a Chartered Engineer with a degree level qualification in a relevant engineering subject and Corporate membership of a relevant institution (eg CIBSE, IET, IMechE). Your professional credibility will be enhanced by extensive senior level practical experience, demonstrating an in-depth understanding of best practice in building services within comparable diverse and complex estates.

You will be keen to make your mark within the newly formed team, proactive in working with your peers to move our services forward. A confident and effective communicator, you will lead your team and manage your stakeholders with competence and professionalism.


Estates Department

The Estates Department provides a number of essential services to the University of Kent and is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the extensive grounds and buildings; the security of students, staff and visitors; transport and travel; a postal service and the telephone exchange as well as the University Design & Print Centre. It is also responsible for the buildings, new development and construction projects both at Canterbury and at our Medway campus at Chatham Maritime and on the Chatham Historic Dock Yard.

The University offers a generous annual leave entitlement; for a full-time member of staff in this role it is 43 days per year. This is made up of 30 days contractual leave, 8 Public Holidays and 5 Customary Days taken when the University is closed at Christmas.

Upon appointment all eligible staff can become members to a contributory, defined benefit occupational pension scheme.

Annual salary increments are usually applied on 1 October each year (subject to start date and spine point for example).
